Hi all,

I'm tossing up the Atto 3 or a Model Y. Model Y is a wonderful car, but I'm concerned it's missing too many features for a car of its price (ie. 360 camera, heads up display, radar, blind spot detector in side mirror, Apple / Android compatibility, etc.)

MY is on order and arrives in a month.

Appreciate any feedback that might sway me one way or the other.

TIA

Some people drive the Tesla for status. Many think BYD inferior. 😀

I looked at it before my Atto 3 purchase. I couldn’t justify the extra cost and lack of features. Plus no QLD subsidy. Plus I can’t stand the culty gatekeeping by Tesla owners.

I have a Model Y, most of the issues you've raised aren't really a problem, it just does things differently, doesn't need radar, 360 camera isn't really needed as it has rear view camera and rear facing side cameras, don't actually need a heads up display, it becomes natural very quickly where it is, android /apple auto only exists because incar navigation and audio options are so terrible in most brands, Tesla navigation works really well & Spotify works well most of the time (except for the occassions reboot when it first loads up).

Having driven both cars I can point out some notable differences tho:

Atto 3 is a far more comfortable ride (Model Y tries to break your back over speed humps and crashes over potholes, the Atto rides very smoothly over them).

Model Y is significantly larger for hauling cargo and larger frunk.

Base Y vs ER Atto models both similar performance and range isn't enough different to be a real issue, but the Y can handle alot faster rapid & AC charging (only really an issue on long hauls tbh).

Y also has the Tesla charging network (at least until it's fully opened up to other vehicles).

Y has Autopilot which is vastly superior to the Atto driver assist & will continue to improve (don't bother with FSD, it's a waste of money).

Atto is obviously significantly cheaper.

Atto has V2L which is a pretty cool function.

In summary, if it's for daily use & you don't long haul or need the extra cargo space then save some money & get the Atto, if you do interstate/ long haul driving fairly reguarly then spend the extra and get the Model Y.

I don't think you'll be disappointed with either vehicle.

We're very happy with our Atto 3. The V2L powers our 270 litre electric hot water system on grey sky days and eases the pressure on our gourmet mushroom farm which isn't connected to the grid. We can power the office entirely from the car when needed.
As a car, it's a dream to drive.

Model Y has way more luggage capacity, which you either need or you don't.
The charging is an interesting one, with Model Y faster both AC and DC.
But for AC, no one needs more then 7kW at home unless they need more than one full charge per day and get that at home somehow despite all the driving. 11kW noticeably better at destination chargers.... except that all but 1 location in my area, the destination chargers are only 7kW.

Then there is DC charging. So far with the Atto 3, on road trips I had not had to wait to charge AT ALL. However, the pattern is to stop every 2 hrs for coffee break etc, and every second stop would be a meal stop. If your pattern is to avoid stops on trips as much as possible, and get there as fast as possible, then the Model Y will significantly better.

They both have advantages. To some extent, this the Atto 3's "time in the sun" with more pluses vs rivals now due to being a relatively newer vehicle from the BYD/Tesla duopoly, but it may only last until the next releases.

Both are impressive vehicles.

Just cancelled my Atto 3. Will be for first in line for the Dolphin arriving by the end of the year. If you don't absolutely need a 5 seater, the Dolphin is much better car on all metrics.

Both have short-comings.

Upside to ModelY. Can take a faster charge on DC (if that is important to you) & AC charge is 11kW in Tesla vs 7kW in BYD. And also the Tesla super charger network - giving you more options.
Android Auto not on BYD in Oz (yet). The wait continues.

I considered both, BYD won me over. Qld $3k EV Rebate made it even cheaper.

Loving every moment of it. 4 weeks in and almost 4,000kms done. 95% of charge is at home with occasional long drive 30% top up on the way home.

Cheeky plus for BYD is sideloading Android apps whilst waiting for Android Auto.

Biggest downside of BYD so far is the "Hi BYD" is completely terrible at understanding Oz accent for the Phone Book and no solution in sight (Android Auto should take care of that).
NB "Hi BYD" works well with other instructions of the car.

End of the day it's a car. You get what you've paid for. If you can afford a MY stick with the Tesla.
